the stolen paintings is still a mystery. We like to think that some kid in the Boston area found the rolled-up masterpiece in his grandparents’ attic, stole it from them, took it to his well-built treehouse and tacked it up on the wall where he and his playmates look at it as they make up stories about the terrors of the seas and other piratey things.

1. In Rembrandt Is in the Wind, Russ Ramsey describes any piece of artwork that is unaccounted for as“ in the wind.”
2. Gardner called her museum Fenway Court, but the name was changed to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum after her death in 1924. According to biographer Natalie Dykstra, Gardner was a huge
fan of the Boston Red Sox. She attended every home game of their victorious 1912 World Series over the New York Giants.
3. He mentions Rembrandt’ s The Anatomy Lesson( 1632) in the introduction, but he never discusses the painting that graces the front cover of the dust jacket.
