Today, the “individualistic, acquisitive
estrangement” of our age continues to create problems for us. The conquistadors in
their unbridled greed eventually destroyed
themselves along with the native South
American cultures they conquered. We
would do well to heed the warnings of
Montaigne and think carefully about
what our own greed has the potential to
destroy.
