Two other movies based on Hammett’s novel were made prior to the 1941 classic: The Maltese Falcon (1931), and Satan Met a Lady (1936). The pre-Production Code 1931 film was banned from rerelease in 1936 because the Production Code Office deemed its contents lewd. The restriction was lifted in 1966, and the film was retitled Dangerous Lady in order to avoid confu- sion with the 1941 film version. Hammett’s granddaughter, Julie Rivett, provided a keen insight into her grandfa- ther’s novel when she was interviewed for the documentary The Maltese Falcon: One Magnificent Bird.
